Taming of the Shrew

No, I'm not in some sort of time warp and talking about last season.

The Hamilton Urban Theatre is putting on a production of Taming of the Shrew, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm throughout July. The script has been a bit reworked- a production of Romeo and Juliet is inturupted by a drunk, and the play morphs into the story of Katherina and Petruchio. Quite nifty.

The performance is at the Gazebo on top of Jackson Suqare. Ticket price is delightfully free.

Also, if you haven't got your membership fees in yet and haven't discussed this with me, I will hunt you down, turn you upside-down and steal any loose change that falls out of your pockets, then run away giggling maniaclly.

Have a nice day!

Audition Notice

The Rural Legends of Mary Rutherford
Written & Directed by Robert Porter

August 17 - 27, 2006
Part of the Hamilton Fringe Festival

For decades now, legends of a witch named Mary Rutherford buried in an obscure woodland cemetery north of Hanover, Ontario have intrigued many. Local youth spread the tales to frighten their peers, and use the grave-site as a partying location. But who was the real 'Mary Rutherford', and where have all the various and conflicting legends about her come from?

Through poetry, music, multimedia, and conventional dialogue, “The Rural Legends of Mary Rutherford” follows the stories of an 'Isabella Rutherford' as her family emigrates from Scotland to Canada in the 1860s – while we also follow a group of rural teens in modern day who enjoy partying at the supposed haunted grave-site that lies down the winding dark and narrow 'Rutherford Road'.

Sign up for Fundraising

Hello all!

Okay, so asking people to just drop by to help with the spare change fundraising didn't work (as we had zero helpers), so we are trying a new approach: asking people to sign up to help ahead of time. If you can make it to a class, post a reply with the time/date you can help out at. Remember to meet 10 minutes ahead of time at the Fireplace in the Student center and that this only takes 15 minutes to accomplish. Directors, if you could allow your actors to duck out of rehersals at this time to help, it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Spare Change Collection

Hello all!

As some of you may know, I am attempting to organize a spare change collection from the summer school classes that are going on. Basically, we get in front of the class, say a speech about the festival (free advertising!!!) and pass around some jars asking for spare change. I know it may sound silly, but we made over $300 last year!

However, what I need are some volunteers: it only take 15 minutes (meeting 10 minutes before the class), and the financial results can be quite profitable! Directors, would you let your casts out of rehersal for a few minutes around these times in order to help out? I know it is difficult to cut out time this close to the performances, but it does earn us quite a bit of money. The schedule is listed below:

Class Time Classroom Date

Summer Camp Help and Treasurer Nagging

Hello lovelies!

As some of you may know, I'm running a Shakespeare summer camp with the Hamilton Urban Theatre Association. It's for kids aged 8-13, and is running the whole month of July.

I'm currently in need of volunteer counsellors. If anyone is able to help out for the first couple of weeks of July, July 3-14th, e-mail me at summer.shakespearience@gmail.com. I'm not taking anyone from SDF for the last two weeks. You lot better be busy!

Furthermore, I'm still missing a few membership fees! They are due June 30! Rar!

Get those into Julie Ella, Monica or myself as quick as possible. If for some reason you can't pay, let us know and we'll work something out.

That's it. Have a lovely, overheated, soggy day!

Stage pics from last year

Someone (I can't remember who) asked to see pics of last years stage. Here they are for your viewing pleasure.
This year's stage will be similar but with variations on dimensions and heights. We will again have the "Trojan Women" platforms on the sides (yes I call them that because I was a Trojan Women) (only the ones closes to the main stage)

Stage Build: July 14th-16th 2006 (and beyond if needed) -stay tuned

we won't have this up hill stage but just thought you might want to see it.

Festival Website

Please note that the SDF website is now more up to date. Not all production information is available yet, but there's enough that it would be appropriate to direct people to the site.

Directors, please check the site for any errors and let Jared know if there are any problems.

The site's address is http://www.summerdramafestival.com. If your computer has the old version cached, you may need to hit the refresh button on your browser to see the new version.

Have a great weekend!

Indoor venue Confirmed

The indoor venue for SDF 2006 will be Hamilton Theater Inc.'s studio Theatre located at 140 MacNab N
Many of us are familiar with this venue and it's people. We are happy to be working with them again this year.

I will be arranging a time where all those interested can come and see the venue before we move in (likely June 20th or 27th). Keep checking back here at the blog for more details.

Ticket Prices

Well there has been quite a reaction to the change in ticket prices that was discussed at the last production meeting. Hopefully this will encourage more participation at the meetings (every Tuesday at 5pm in MUSC room 220)

Monica and I have further discussed the matter and we have come to the following conclusion:
General $8
Student/ Senior $6
children under 12 $4 (un-advertised)
Festival Pass: General $24, Student/senior $18

these prices have been confirmed with Chris and are now a part of the budget.

Thrust Recruiting Actors/Readers

Thrust Original (the SDF original works event) is now recruiting readers/actors to help workshop and publicly read scripts.

Participants should be available for two workshop evenings on June 30 and July 6. They should also be available on the weekend of July 7-9 (in the evenings) for the receptions/public readings. Volunteers should be comfortable reading expressively in public, and should be willing to actively participate in workshop readings, discussions and some workshop scene acting. If you don't have experience but would like to get involved, this might be a great opportunity for you. Of course, experienced actors and playwrights are welcome as well.

If you are interested, please send an email to volunteer@thrustoriginal.com. Please let us know your name, email address and phone number.

Thanks for your interest. If you have any questions, please send them to the email address above.

Jared and Kait.
